1. Don't Buy ANY Fur

If you don't want to support fur cruelty, like that inflicted on dogs and cats, and all kinds of other animals - Don't Buy or Wear any Fur!

Remember - In Canada, dog fur doesn't need to be labelled as dog fur.  Cat fur doesn't need to be labelled as cat fur.

In fact, fur of any kind is exempt from the labelling laws of Canada.  It needn't even be labelled as to where the fur came from.

Today, it is often difficult or impossible to even distinguish fake fur from real fur.

Are these cat toys, which are for sale in Vancouver, B.C. and pet supply stores across the country, made from CAT FUR?

This fur purse has no label whatsoever.

These shoes are labelled only as

"Fur from China".

2. Help Get the Video Seen

Seeing for yourself what these dogs and cats are going through says it stronger than any words can.

Help get the video, Silent Screams, seen:

3. Contact Canada's Prime Minister

Canada's International Trade Minister, Hon. David Emerson, is the Minister that could institute an import ban.  However, Mr. Emerson states, in a letter of March 2006 on this issue, that "one of my responsibilities is to preserve and improve Canada's access to foreign markets, including fur markets."  The previous Trade Minister, Hon. James S. Peterson, pointed out that a ban on the import of dog and cat fur is not possible unless or until a ban on the domestic sale within Canada is also put in place, due to World Trade Organization related restrictions.

Fur-Bearer Defenders is therefore urging people everywhere to demand new legislation covering both the import and sale of dog and cat fur.  The United States did it this way with their 'Dog and Cat Protection Act of 2000'.

    Write the Prime Minister!

    The Right Honourable Stephen Harper

    Office of the Prime Minister

    80 Wellington Street

    Ottawa, Ontario

    Canada, K1A 0A2

    Or fax him at:  613-941-6900

Ask him to ban the import and sale of ALL dog and cat fur products NOW!

(Though letters sent through the mail are recommended, emails can also be sent to the Prime Minister at: pm@pm.gc.ca.   His web address is:  http://www.pm.gc.ca).

Write him, and write him again!  And don't let him pass your letter off to the Trade Minister, who is unable to do the job.

(Please send copies of any replies you get to Fur-Bearer Defenders

4. Contact Your Local Member of Parliament

Your local Canadian MP, as your federal representative, also has power to influence a ban.  But he/she needs to hear of the concern from constituents like you.

Find the contact for your MP by visiting:    MP Finder

5. Donate to Fur-Bearer Defenders' Campaigns

Fur-Bearer Defenders has a long history of working to protect fur-bearing animals from the fur trade's cruel traps.

But when we saw how desperate these poor, beautiful dogs and cats were, all to supply that same needless, profit-driven fur trade, we simply had to take action to help.

Now we need your help.  It costs money to keep the campaign going - the videos, the literature, the awareness ads, even the website and so much more...  (With your terrific help, we were able to put ads in newspapers of 7 major centers in Canada on May 3rd 2006 - but we need to bring the animal's message even further.)  All this work is fully funded and supported by caring individuals like you.  Your support will help Fur-Bearer Defenders save lives.  Dogs and cats are now counting on us too.  We want to do MORE for them.  We NEED to do more for them.  Who else have they got?  Their story needs to be told, so that caring people everywhere can ban together and help them.  Please, make as large a gift as you can today.  When we look into the eyes of the animals, we know there is no better reward in the world.
